Festivals in Andhra Pradesh



Andhra Pradesh is situated at the south-central part of India. The varied color of culture and tradition in Andhra Pradesh has made it famous to the tourists of around the world. Andhra Pradesh is famous mainly for its fairs. In most of the festivals of Andhra Pradesh the culture of the state and widely of the country adds pulsating life. People of Andhra Pradesh celebrate all these festivals with great enthusiasm and gusto. Religious festivals in Andhra Pradesh:

Pongal in January: Pongal is celebrated from the 13th to the 15th of January. This is the harvest festival celebrated mainly in the southern part of India. This is the celebration o f new crops. Pongal literally means, ‘boiling over’. This festival is also celebrated by the farmers of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, etc.

Sivaratri in February-March: This is basically worshipping lord Shiva. People across the country remain awake throughout the night and listen to the Vedic recital by the priest.

Ugadi in April: The New Year day in Andhra Pradesh is celebrated as Ugadi.

Vinayaka or Ganesh Chaturthi in August and September: This celebration of the birthday of Lord Ganesh. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated through a spell of ten days. After worshipping Ganesh for ten days the idol of Lord Ganesh is immersed in the Hussain Sagar Lake. This festival is celebrated with much enthusiasm in Andhra Pradesh.

Muharram in April: This is basically a Muslim festival and is celebrated with much gusto in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh. Different other festivals of the Muslims like, Id, Milad-Un-Nabi are also celebrated across the state of Andhra Pradesh. Duiring this time assemblies are held at Dar-us-Salaam and Mecca Masjid. People in Andhra Pradesh these festivals with similar enthusiasm.

State festivals in Andhra Pradesh: The four festivals conducted by the Andhra Pradesh tourism are the major tourist attractions for the tourists.

Deccan Festival in December: This festival is to celebrate the art, culture and cultural heritage of Hyderabad. People in Andhra Pradesh celebrate this festival with their traditional food and different other cuisines. The city is famous for its pearl studded jewelry and bangles. People, especially tourists do a lot of shopping over there.

Lumbini festival in December: Lumbini festival is basically to celebrate the Buddhist heritage in Andhra Pradesh. This festival is mainly celebrated in Hyderabad and Nagarjunasagar. This festival is celebrated for three days, starting from the 2nd Friday of December, each year.
