Meghalaya is a small hilly strip in the north eastern part of India. Meghalaya which means the Abode of Clouds is covered with forest. Earlier foreign tourist required special permit to enter Meghalaya but restrictions were removed in 1955. Meghalaya is considered to be the most picturesque state of India. Great vacation in Meghalaya offers many different interests to its tourists. Meghalaya has some of the thickest subtropical forests in the country. It constitutes one of the most important ecotourism circuits in India today. The vast subtropical forests in Meghalaya support a vast variety of flora and fauna. Meghalaya has 2 National Parks and 3 Wildlife Sanctuaries which offers great vacations in Meghalaya.

Meghalaya also offers much adventure tourism in the form of mountaineering, rock climbing, trekking and hiking. As you trek through the most amazing trekking routes in India you come across some rare animals such as the slow loris, assorted deer and bear. Enjoy various water sports activities at the Umiam Lake which has a water sports complex with facilities such as rowboats, paddleboats, sailing boats, cruise-boats, water-scooters and speedboats.

An estimated 500 natural limestone and sandstone caves spread over the entire state of Meghalaya offers great tourist attractions in Meghalaya. The Caves are the longest and deepest caves in the sub-continent. Krem Liat Prah is the longest cave and Synrang Pamiang is the deepest cave, both located in the Jaintia Hills. Cavers from United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Ireland and the US visit Meghalaya to explore these caves. However not many of these caves have been developed or promoted adequately for major tourist destinations.The picturesque town of Cherrapunjee’ lying south of the capital of Meghalay, Shillong is regarded as one of the most popular tourist spots in North East of India. The town is very well known

Meghlaya is replete with waterfalls. The popular waterfalls being the Elephant Falls, Shadthum Falls, Weinia falls, Bishop Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Langshiang falls and Sweet Falls that forms great vacations in Meghalaya. The hot springs at Jakrem near Mawsynram are believed to have curative and medicinal properties.

Meghalaya also has many natural and manmade lakes. The Umiam Lake (popularly known as Bara Pani meaning Big water) on the Guwahati-Shillong road is a major tourism attraction for tourist. Meghalaya several parks; Thangkharang Park, the Eco-park, the Botanical Garden and Lady Hydari Park to name a few. Dawki, which is located at about 96 Kilometres from Shillong is the gateway to Bangladesh and affords a scenic view of some of the tallest mountain ranges in Meghalaya and the Bangladesh border lands.
